You’ve Built an Amazing E-Commerce Business, Here’s How You Can Take It to the Next Level

I absolutely love how exciting things are when you first start an e-commerce business.

Whether it’s the amazing feeling of uploading your last product or the incredible sensation of getting your first sale…

It’s a period of time where you really don’t need motivation, because well, you absolutely love what you’re doing and that’s the best motivation there is.

But it doesn’t stop there.

It seems like this initial euphoria sticks around for awhile, giving you enough drive to survive the long hours and keep growing your business…

And it usually lasts for a few months, but all good things must come to an end and before you know it - you usually end up hitting some form of plateau.

This plateau seems to differ for every business, but it always ends up affecting the amount of money you’re able to make…

And here’s the crazy part.

It seems like no matter how hard you try or even how many sales you’re able to produce, the profit margins always stay the same…

And that usually means one thing - a stagnant business that stops growing.

That’s what happened to me anyway

I’ve learned a lot of things over the years, but if there’s one common pattern that I continue to notice...

It’s that in one way, shape or form - every business runs into this…

And that’s especially true for e-commerce.

This is something I wish I knew when I started my first e-commerce business back in college, BUT, I didn’t…

And once I finally hit my plateau, I didn’t know what to do.

I just kept trying harder and kept increasing my sales, two things that did help...but not enough to justify the crazy hours I was working…

So after trying every option I could think of, I finally threw in the towel and figured I’d just hit my peak.

This sucked and wasn’t something I wanted to happen, but at the same time it wasn’t necessarily detrimental as I was a college kid with few expenses…

So I decided to accept my fate, stock up on ramen noodles, and carry on with my life.

Then, something amazing happened

A few years later I was graduated from college and after working for a large firm, I’d become a CPA and really started to make great strides in my career.

All of this happened quick and made me completely forget about my e-commerce business…

Until one day when the boss handed me a new client.

Now I can’t go into a lot of detail as I value my client’s privacy, but let’s just say he was the founder of a large manufacturing company and even though he’d built an amazing business over the past 4 years…

He was disappointed with his results over the previous 24 months and wanted to figure out why he wasn’t able to grow.

Now by grow, I don’t mean getting more sales as that’s hardly ever the issue...

I mean growing profits, the amount of money that you actually get to keep and use however you’d like (such as reinvesting back into your business).

Anyway, knowing that I was an ambitious young CPA with experience in this industry, the boss knew this was a great project for me and after going through the details - I immediately got to work.

It didn’t take me long to realize that he’d hit the dreaded plateau, and seeing that sales wasn’t his problem…

I decided to take a different route, one that focused on his expenses.

I guess I wasn’t sure where to start or what I was looking for…

But I knew that like most business owners, he probably hadn’t looked at his expenses in years (if ever)...

And that created the perfect opportunity for me to capitalize on this low-hanging fruit, one that’d allow me to start getting results right away.

So over the next few days, that’s exactly what I did

I started off by going through countless bookkeeping transactions and untangling the mess that’d been created over the years.

This was a very tedious task and not something that most accountants like to do, but I knew I had to do this before I could create accurate financials and get the clarity I needed to understand his business…

Which would then allow me to start identifying areas that needed improvement.

I finally finished this task a few days later and even though there were plenty of areas that he could improve, one glaring number continued to stick out to me…

And that was his fixed expenses, which had stayed the same (as a % of revenues) ever since he started this business!

Now I guess I can’t say this is completely crazy as it’s something I’ve seen a time or two…

But I also knew his business was large enough to take advantage of supplier discounts, and that alone would create an immediate impact on his bottom line.

This at least gave me direction on where to start, and after a few more days of looking through everything...I finally emailed him with my notes and patiently waited for his reply.

It took a few days to hear back from him, but once I finally did...it was the greatest moment of my life.

Why?

Because I knew that my analysis was going to help his business, but I honestly didn’t realize it'd help him this much.

Results were amazing

As the client explained in his email, he’d taken my advice to heart and after doing everything that I mentioned in the analysis...

He was able to take advantage of discounts that he wasn’t even aware of, and after doing some quick math…

He immediately realized that these simple changes were going to start putting money back in his pocket, right away.

But it kept getting better

Now I’d be liar if I didn’t say this felt amazing.

I mean, I’d just single-handedly helped this large company dramatically improve their bottom line…

And I thought this meant I’d be able to kick back and relax for a few days, but it turns out this was just the tip of the iceberg.

The next day this same client walked into our office and told my boss (the owner) that he wanted to start a full relationship with our firm.

I didn’t know this at the time, but apparently he’d worked with other consultants in the past and they didn’t do a thing for him…

So after seeing the results we provided in less than 2 weeks, he was completely on board and wanted us to do everything we could in order to help him grow.

This eventually led to us doing an even more intensive analysis on his financials, one that was designed to cover every possible area of improvement for his company…

And even though this tedious work seemed overwhelming at the time, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Fast forwarding a few years

So after we completed the last analysis, we had all the information we needed and that let us implement a lot of positive changes in his company.

These changes seemed to help in a lot of ways, but he really liked the increased cash flow and how it allowed him to capitalize on inventory discounts…

And at the same time, I don’t think the detailed analysis (that showed him profitability of each revenue stream) hurt either.

Long story short, he was now equipped with everything he needed to reach his goals (which he did)...

And I was now equipped with valuable experience that'd help any company grow.

Before I knew it, this quickly turned into my main line of work and within a few months I’d gained the confidence of my boss…

Which meant that I was getting more and more projects, and that allowed me to work with a lot of different companies in a lot of different industries...

But there was still one industry I hadn’t had a chance to help yet:

E-Commerce

Deep down, I thought about what my new knowledge could do for e-commerce ever since I helped that first client…

But there was one problem, we never had any e-commerce businesses reach out for our services.

I guess I’m not sure why this was the case, but if I had to guess - I’d say that most e-commerce owners don’t like to work with traditional CPAs as they don’t understand the industry 100%...

And since marketing was never my cup of tea, this meant that I either had to create my own e-commerce business or take the leap and find a client on my own.

This was an easy decision at first as I figured I’d just create my own business again and line my own pockets…

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was defeating the main purpose…

Which was using my knowledge to help fellow e-commerce entrepreneurs grow.

Then, I did the unthinkable

Okay, so I know this sounds funny now - but at the time it was a serious deal.

Knowing that I was never going to get an e-commerce client working at my current firm, I finally decided to venture out on my own and find my first e-commerce client.

I thought I could find a client by just sending cold email, but it didn't take long to realize that wasn't going to work...

So then I bit the bullet and paid somebody to set up a marketing campaign for me, a decision that’s honestly changed my life.

Within hours I’d had a list of e-commerce businesses that’d been looking for someone like me...

And after a few conversations, I’d found a perfect fit for my new venture.

We began working together right away and 6 weeks later, I knew I’d found my specialty…

Which was helping e-commerce owners reach their dream.

Why's that my specialty?

Because just like every other business I’d worked with in the past, my proven formula was able to help this new client get the results he was looking for right away…

And after he started telling his colleagues about my results, it didn’t take long to start getting referrals.

A few weeks later I had enough clients to quit the job and start my own CPA firm that was dedicated to e-commerce...

Which is exactly what I did

Now I could sit here and tell you about the amazing results that all of my new clients received, or how they constantly made fun of me for not charging more…

But I have a feeling you’re ready to hear how this would help you…

And that’s great, because that’s actually the reason I’m here today.

Remember all the clients I told you about earlier?

The ones that essentially caused me to start eCom CPA and gave me the confidence to specialize in this field?

Well, let’s just say that there can be too much of a good thing…

And after working with these clients for years, I eventually helped them grow to the point where they needed a full-fledged accounting department….

Or in other words, I worked myself out of a job - and after helping them setup their own accounting departments...

I’ve finally reached a point to where I can take on new clients again.

Now this is extremely exciting for me as that means I get to help more businesses grow...

Or at a bare minimum, at least help them avoid costly mistakes...

But at the same time, I’m not just looking for any client.

My reputation and quality of work are very important to me…

And after working with hundreds of businesses over the years, I’ve realized that my ideal client is an e-commerce business owner that could benefit from:

  • Having more time in your day. Something I’m able to accomplish by taking care of tedious tasks (like sales tax compliance) and increasing your margins, a dynamic duo that opens many doors and allows you to work on your business, not in it…
  • Having clarity and reliable information to make big decisions. After working with dozens of clients, I’ve realized that most owners understand finance..they just rarely have information that's reliable enough to work with. This is dangerous and something that could hurt any business, but it's something I'll help you avoid

  • Having more money in your pocket, without having to work more. Let’s face it, more sales is never the problem...it’s getting more profitable sales. Whether that’s analyzing new revenue streams or capitalizing on discounts that few owners know about, I guarantee my services will increase your bottom line

  • Paying less tax, and staying on Uncle Sam’s good side. As I’m sure you’ve heard, the only things certain in this world are death and taxes...meaning whether you like it or not, taxes are something you’ll have to deal with. And even though paying taxes is never fun, I provide year-round tax planning that’ll ensure you’re paying the least amount possible...AND avoiding any tax penalties while doing so…

  • Or having a trusted advisor who’s been through the entire process many times, providing you with years of experience that lets you avoid painful lessons that other entrepreneurs have to go through….

And I was wondering if any of these could help you?

Help you take your established e-commerce business to the next level, accomplish everything you’ve always wanted...and best of all - avoid costly mistakes along the way?

If so, then it sounds like a quick consultation might be right for you..

And when I say quick consultation, I actually mean it.

I realize you're busy and I don’t want to be one of those guys that disguises a “quick consultation” as a full-blown sales call…

Instead, I really just want to learn more about your business and see if my services would be right for you…

Then if it sounds like a great fit, we can talk about the other details later.

So what do you think?

Would you be willing to jump on a 5-minute call to see if my proven formula could work for your business as well?

If so, then I’d love to talk with you…
